As a mother to three rambunctious fur babies, I’m always on the lookout for the best food for them. You hear so many horror stories of dogs dying because of additives in their food. You can’t be complacent about it – you have to check what’s going into their food.

When I first started doing that, I was shocked — ingredients like “chicken meal,” I expected. Ingredients like ash, I did not. That’s when I started looking into premium lines. I wanted food that offered great nutrition, not a bunch of fillers.

Nutro is a popular brand globally, so I decided to give it a whirl. I compiled these Nutro Ultra Dog Food reviews to help you see if it’s the right choice for your pet.

Top Choice

If you’re short on time, Nutro Ultra Dry Dog Food for Small Breeds is a great fit for adult dogs as it includes the right amounts of proteins, fat, and carbohydrates to provide a complete and balanced diet.

For the rest of these Nutro Ultra Dog Food reviews, I tried to get a good cross-section of the range.

Our Nutro Ultra Dog Food Reviews

1. Nutro Ultra Dry Dog Food for Small Breeds

Nutro Ultra Dry Dog Food for Small Breed

Nutro Ultra’s small breed formula a wide range of nutrients and a high ratio of protein designed to nourish toy breeds.

Features

  • Three types of protein – chicken, salmon, and lamb
  • 29 percent protein
  • Added superfoods, such as blueberries, kale, chia, and coconut
  • No corn, wheat, soy, or chicken by-product meal
  • No artificial colorants, preservatives, or flavors

What I Like About This Product

Nutro does seem to have gone out of their way to make sure that they’ve packed a lot of nutrients into their food. One of my schnauzers, Archie, is a little fusspot. He had no qualms about eating this, though.

Compared to other brands of dog food, it has a lot of protein. I also like that it has kale in it. When I do cook food for my dogs, I like to add some greens.

The coconut oil in the mix should also be helpful for skin complaints. Pickle’s skin has always been problematic, so I have high hopes for this food.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

Personally, I do wonder about the blueberries and chia in the food. These are not foods that dogs would come across naturally in nature.

My neighbor’s Maltese has something of a sensitive stomach. She found that this food made her dog’s tummy run.

Pros

  • Lots of high-quality protein
  • Added nutrients
  • No artificial flavors, colorants, or preservatives
  • Reasonably priced
  • Fewer fillers and no ash
  • Small cubes ideal for smaller breeds

Cons

  • Not for dogs with digestive issues

I'd start with a small packet first and see how your dog likes it. Overall, though, I'd say that this is an excellent alternative to brands like Hills that use grains.

Overall Rating

4 out of 5 This food is paw-licking good.

2. Nutro Ultra Weight Management Adult Dry Dog Food

Nutro Ultra Weight Management Adult Dry Dog Food 2

We like to spoil our dogs, but we have to draw the line somewhere if they’re getting a little podgy. This food promises to help you do just that.

What I Like About This Product

Archie and Pickle are getting a little broad around the beam. Pickle’s had something of a weight problem since she got spayed, and it doesn’t help that she loves her food. She’ll often con other family members into feeding her as well.

With this brand, I don’t have to worry too much about a lot of added fat or fillers and carbs. There’s also a good fiber content here.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

My one complaint here is that the kibble is a little too small. I had to serve it in their anti-gobble bowls, or they’d just hoover it up. I do think that a slightly bigger size would work better for weight control.

Pros

  • Lots of high-quality protein
  • Lower fat and higher fiber content
  • Added nutrients
  • No artificial flavors, colorants, or preservatives
  • Reasonably priced
  • Fewer fillers and no ash

Cons

  • Kibble is easy to gobble down

Overall, this is a pretty good formulation from a company that prides itself in providing high-quality nutrition.

Overall Rating

4 out of 5 A great diet food for doggies.

3. Nutro Ultra Dry Dog Food for Large Breeds

Nutro Ultra Dry Dog Food for Large Breeds 2

With larger breeds, the issue is providing enough nutritious food without breaking the bank. This food promises to help you do that.

Features

  • Three types of protein – chicken, salmon, and lamb
  • 26 percent protein
  • 13 percent fat
  • Added superfoods are blueberries, kale, chia, and coconut
  • No corn, wheat, soy, or chicken by-product meal
  • No artificial colorants, preservatives, or flavors

What I Like About This Product

I have miniature schnauzers, so the chunks are a little too large for my fur babies. The blend of ingredients is high-quality, with a fair amount of protein. There is plenty of nutrition in this food to keep your dogs happy and healthy.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

This is not the best option if your pet has digestive issues. I’d recommend trying a small bag before committing to a bigger batch.

Pros

  • Lots of high-quality protein
  • A good amount of fiber
  • Not too much fat
  • Added nutrients
  • No artificial flavors, colorants, or preservatives
  • Reasonably priced
  • Fewer fillers and no ash

Cons

  • Not for sensitive tummies

Overall, this is a solid product for most dogs. Your pooch should have loads of energy and a beautiful shiny coat thanks to the added ingredients.

Overall Rating

4 out of 5 Keep your dog in tip-top shape.

4. Nutro Ultra Puppy Dry Dog Food

Nutro Ultra Puppy Dry Dog Food 2

To give your puppy a good start in life, you must give him the right nutrition. Nutro’s Puppy formula is a great place to start.

What I Like About This Product

There is plenty of protein and fat to help your puppy grow and replenish their energy. It’s great for most picky eaters – they’ll gobble it up.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

Can cause digestive upsets, so it’s best to start with a small bag first.

Pros

  • Lots of high-quality protein
  • A good amount of fiber
  • A healthy fat content
  • Added nutrients
  • No artificial flavors, colorants, or preservatives
  • Reasonably priced
  • Fewer fillers and no ash

Cons

  • Can cause an upset tummy in more sensitive dogs

If you want your new pup to have boundless energy, this could be the right food for him. Just be warned, hide your slippers, shoes, and so on. He’s going to get up to a lot of mischief.

Overall Rating

4 out of 5 When your puppy deserves only the best.

5. Nutro Signature Duck Entree Grain-Free Filets in Gravy

Nutro Signature Duck Entree Grain Free Filets in Gravy 1

If you want your dog to fall head over heels back in love with you again, this could be right for you. Succulent filets drenched in a rich and tasty gravy will have your dog dancing for joy.

Features

  • Duck meat
  • Grain-free
  • Six one-portion trays
  • 3.5 ounces of meat per tray
  • 8.5 percent protein

What I Like About This Product

This is a convenient way to serve your dog his wet food. Each tray has a single portion size in it. I also like the fact that you can buy six trays. The pack of tins that I got for my dogs was convenient, but I like to change up the flavors.

The dogs also seem to love the flavor. I’ll often mix this in with their kibble in the morning. It’s also great for tempting dogs that don’t have much of an appetite.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

It’s pricey, especially compared to the tins.

Pros

  • Reasonable protein content
  • Your dogs will love the flavor
  • A nice rich gravy is used
  • Filets of meat are used to cut fat

Cons

  • Is on the pricey side

Overall, I’d keep these as a more occasional treat, especially if you have big dogs. It does make a nice change from the tinned food, though. If you’re looking for the most convenient option, this is it. All you do is to peel off the lid, dump the food out and you’re done. From a convenience perspective, it really doesn’t get easier.

Overall Rating

4 ½ out of 5 If you’re looking for poochie smoochies, you won’t find better.

6. Nutro Hearty Stews

Nutro Hearty Stews 1

If you want to give your best friend something special that won't break the bank, this is a good option.

Features

  • 8 percent protein
  • 5.5 percent fat
  • Has rice and wheat
  • Buy individual cans or a pack of twelve

What I Like About This Product

This is a more affordable option if you have big dogs. It’s also great for dogs who have a sensitive stomach. The rice will help to settle their stomachs.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

There's no lid. Once you've opened the can, you have to either use clingfilm or find a lid that fits. It's not a big deal. I used one of the lids that I got with another brand of dog food. That said, a separate cover would have been great.

If you have a lot of dogs or big dogs, this works out as more affordable wet food. Your dogs will love the flavor. If they’re anything like mine, they’ll be pulling the cute puppy dog eyes to get even more.

Overall Rating

4 out of 5 The best option for your best friend

About the Brand

Nutro has been making waves in the market for good reason. Initially established in 1926, the company set out to make quality nutritional products for dogs. The company was moved to California and established itself as a trusted American brand.

Up until 1976, you could only buy the food in the United States. Since then, the company has expanded operations and is now one of the premier global ranges.

The company’s Ultra range is the company’s premium line. Most of the products within the line are wheat- and soy-free. The range has been hailed as an innovative product that looks at the holistic value of a well-balanced diet.

From the standpoint of safety, the brand did come under fire in 2008 and 2009. It was then found that the levels of zinc in some of the products were high. While still within the legal limits within the United States, the company was taken to task.

Since then, they’ve changed their formulations to reduce the amount of zinc in the products. The company also implemented stricter safety protocols.

Overall, this brand has had some bad press. That said, they do seem to have learned from their mistakes. The last recall was in 2015 and as a result of potential mold contamination. The company has chosen to err on the side of caution in these instances.

Overall, they are a good brand and use quality ingredients. They work to create specialist products that should keep your furry friends in great shape.

Final Thoughts

Any of the products in the Nutro range can be relied upon to provide excellent nutrition. What I like about this brand is that they are committed to the health of our pets. They work on creating a taste and texture that will appeal to even fussy eaters.

If you’re trying it for the first time, you’ll want to stick to a smaller bag. That way, if your dogs don’t like it, or it doesn’t agree with them, a smaller bag means less food wasted. I also recommend that you try one of their best formulas, the Nutro Ultra Dry Dog Food for Small Breeds which is a premium natural diet for adult dogs that provides complete nutrition for overall good health.

The expert opinion for these Nutro Ultra Dog Food reviews in this house, at least, is that it scores four out of five barks.
